Search Engine Optimization

What Is SEO

Search Engine Optimization or SEO, is the process by which websites obtain good listings in search engines and there are many factors that can affect a website’s ranking including its design, quality of content, meta tags and popularity of the links to the site.

SEO is a free way to get huge amounts of traffic to your website, so can be utilized by marketers, small business or major company brands.  It is not the most stable form of advertising, but when mastered, it can drive massive amounts of traffic to your site.  It is very important to be ranked well in the search engines and this is where choosing the correct keywords will be very important.   It is not just users of the internet who are driven to the sites listed on the search engines, but external marketing efforts drive customers to search engines also.  There are three types of search engine optimization:

1.     Website
2.     Articles
3.     Blog

SEO has two distinct advantages.  Using giants like Google and Yahoo are the top high traffic search engines and you will be able to get tons of traffic to your website; and the type of traffic is quality-targeted so users are already looking for your offer.  SEO is a free method of search engine marketing and you are able to implement tools and methods to get traffic to your web pages, possibly achieving top ranking in the search results or SERP's.  The higher your ranking, the more trafffic you will get, but SEO requires much hard work.

To be successful, there are many features you must change on your web pages in order to make them user-friendly.  The search engines like Google and Yahoo use quality score algorithms to rank your web pages and these quality score algorithms are complicated and are constantly being changed by giants such as Google, such as the recent Panda update, designed to weed out 'content farms', which has had an affect on sites like Ezinearticles.

Research Enhances SEO

Research is the tool to use in order to gain maximum optimization, without extensive research, your content is worthless and without keyword research your site will never be noticed.  Make sure that you research your keywords before setting up your website so that you can include the relevant keywords in your content.  When article marketing to optimize your content, use keywords that get 5,000 results or less on Google, although you can optimize your pages for multiple keywords.   You have to find target keywords that have limited competition but also get high traffic.

In order to find the right target keywords and to check their traffic volume, you can use a keyword research tool.  The Google Keyword Research Tool is the ideal free tool.  You will note that the longer the keywords are, the less the competition they have.

Do a bit of research on the competition and find out what your competitors are doing, this will keep you on the right track.  If they are ranked high within the search engines, and for those achieving maximum ranking, concentrate on what keywords they are using, how their content is built around those keywords.

The search engines draw their information from sources within your site, being the keywords you use.  A Google search result will include the title, which is the tags for the website, the remaining content on a Google result will be taken from the meta tags or description of the content, whichever has a higher relevance.

You need to remember that the search engines utilise an algorithm, which is constantly changed and reviewed, so you need to keep testing your content and tracking your efforts.

Five Factors to achieve Ranking

  • Target keywords – these should include the product that you are promoting
  • Keyword placement – placing your keywords in the title and headline and first paragraph
  • Title/Headline/Tags – should include the search term for that topic
  • Content – articles should be between 500-700 words
  • Related content – relevance is key but so is fresh content

Importance Of Linking

Linking to other websites is a very important aspect to achieving high page ranking.  It is possible to obtain one way links or backlinks to your site. The sites linked back to your website will assist with page ranking status; if they achieve high page ranking then this will have an affect on your page ranking.  There are several ways to achieve links to your site:
  • Forums – most people use forums nowadays, but they do have another purpose, and that is to increase your page ranking.  Join Forums, leave posts and if you are able to include a link in your signature, all the better.
  • Blogs and News sites – you can comment and leave posts on blog and news sites.
  • Article submission – writing articles and publishing on article directories
  • Social networking – using your social networking accounts to link back to your site
  • Website directories – join the top website directories
  • Contact high page rank sites – this involves work, but you can contact website owners and suggest cross-linking in return for something, ie, a newsletter, promotion or e-book
Enjoy optimizing your site for the search engines.
